Saltwire Article - Registration opens Sept. 6 for Seniors College of P.E.I. programs

August 22, 2023

(Excerpts from Saltwire article by Gary MacDougall August 22, 2023)

'With the opening of registration for Seniors College of P.E.I. nearing, Islanders need to start exercising their keyboard fingers.

Once registration for the 2023-24 semesters opens at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 6, many of the popular courses on offer can quickly fill up, says college president Shirley Pierce.'

'Her advice is to go to the website at seniorscollege.ca, review the available courses on the college website, pay the $170 registration fee in advance and click away after registration opens. The fee allows a person to take as many courses as they desire at any of the three P.E.I. locations in Summerside, Charlottetown and Montague. The college has fall (October and November), winter(January and February) and spring (April and May) semesters.

Pierce says while courses are still being finalized, there will be between 130 and 150 on offer. Most are in-person but some are offered online, which helps those individuals with travel issues.

New courses

This is the 25th year for the college and events are planned in September to mark the silver anniversary.

A number of new courses are planned this year, including Dance for fun and fitness; Introduction to Mi’kmaq; Understanding hearing loss and Six weeks to better Scrabble.'

'The new vice-president of the Seniors College is Steve Connolly. In getting involved in helping seniors he is following in his father's footsteps. The late Steve Connolly organized seniors clubs across the province in the 1970s.'

'Connolly is well known in the P.E.I. business world through his company the Connolly Group. The college was looking for a person with strong business ties to help build financial stability.'

'Pierce says Connolly has already met with success. The Rotary Club of Charlottetown has' become a gold sponsor with a $10,000 donation and Lawtons Drugs is a bronze sponsor after a $2,500 donation.

She says even though the Seniors College is largely a volunteer-driven body, like any organization it does have expenses such as paying for venues, facilitators, a part-time coordinator and marketing. Finding stable funding is important.'
