Music and Movement (Queens County)
Learn, feel and express music through playful and dynamic movement activities.! In a typical class, participants move to the music, synchronize body actions with musical rhythms, follow their partner's movements, react quickly to random signals, echo movement sequences, interact with other people and objects, and follow verbal instructions and musical cues in order to complete activities. Some activities are structured and oriented, while some activities are improvised with creativity.
Program: 45-60 minutes of group music activities once a week for 10 weeks
Participants: Open to all. This program is part of a research project with the University of Ottawa and Public Health Agency of Canada. Participants might be approached for research.

Teaching Process | Classes follow the pedagogical principals of Dalcroze Eurhythmics, a unique, exciting, and powerful way of knowing music through the body. The Dalcroze approach explores musical concepts through social and interactive methods that invite students to trust their ideas and develop their own intuitions. When experiencing a Dalcroze class, you begin to feel, express and master the flow that is essential to music, dance and the other performing arts.
Dalcroze Education has been around for more than a century. It was created by Émile Jaques-Dalcroze, a man of multiple talents. He was a pianist, a music composer and a stage director. He was also an educator and professor at the Geneva Music Conservatory in Switzerland. His ideas have been confirmed by contemporary research and are of interest to people working in various fields, notably in music, dance, theatre, education and therapy. Dalcroze Eurhythmics can be applied at all levels of education, from early years to higher education, as well as in community and therapeutic settings.
Jaques-Dalcroze used to say “let your body become music.” In a Dalcroze class, we hear the music and we respond to it physically. We embody the music by experiencing and grasping it through our whole being – through our emotions, sensations, feelings and thoughts. All musical concepts are developed in and through body movement, which is the link between the ear and the brain, leading the students to an embodied and deeply internalized understanding of music. This allows us to gain a practical, physical experience of music before we theorise and perform. It ensures that the whole person (not just the fingers and the brain) is educated in the development of musicianship and artistry. |
