Finance - Tax Planning for Older Adults (Queens County)
This 2.5 hour course will focus on tax planning issues that impact older adults. Our agenda will include a review of current tax rates; tax deductions often missed by older adults; spousal pension splitting; RRSP withdrawal timing and requirements at age 71; Old Age Security and the Guaranteed Income Supplement; the benefits of charitable giving and a hodge podge of other items. Tax issues regarding changes to ownership of your home and real estate will be briefly discussed; however, for a more thorough analysis of this topic, as well as financial issues related to living at home, in a community care residence or a long-term care home, see the separate course titled, "Housing and Related Financial Issues for Older Adults."

Objectives | The goal of this session is to bring your attention to certain tax deductions available to older adults, and unexpected tax traps they often face. The focus will be on issues that are not common in younger years, and on topics which your tax preparer may also not be aware if they work mostly with younger taxpayers. This is not an in-depth training course - it is to bring awareness of tips and traps so that you can obtain further advice, and save some taxes or avoid some penalties. Tax legislation changes often, so rather than relying on what you learn in this course, you should review the concepts that concern you with your own tax advisor. |
